  16. <p>     In the West, the most outrageous aspect of the crackdown on
  17. the Bank of Credit & Commerce International is that it was so long
  18. overdue. But most Pakistanis hold a very different view of the
  19. global banking empire founded by fellow countryman Agha Hasan
  20. Abedi.

  22. <p>     At home he is revered as a courageous Third World
  23. entrepreneur whose bank has been hounded by racist Western
  24. financial interests. In Karachi last week, the English-language
  25. Daily News made the extraordinary claim that "Jewish pressure"
  26. led U.S. authorities to crack down on B.C.C.I.'s laundering of
  27. drug money. Said Rubab Khan, a Karachi business executive: "This
  28. is part of the Western plot to seize all the money and assets
  29. of the Arabs and drive out the Pakistani bankers from
  30. international banking."

  32. <p>     Sinister theories also echoed in the Persian Gulf last
  33. week. At the Bahrain Marina Club, a Saudi computer operator
  34. explained, "It seems to many of us in the Muslim world that the
  35. bank is being attacked, at least in part, because of its Muslim
  36. ideals." Ideals? That view of B.C.C.I.'s criminal management may
  37. seem strange enough, but Muslims harbor even more elaborate
  38. conspiracy theories, linking B.C.C.I.'s problems with those of
  39. another onetime Muslim success story, Saddam Hussein. A senior
  40. executive with one of Bahrain's largest companies notes that the
  41. powers closing in on B.C.C.I. are "the same people who were
  42. involved in the coalition during the gulf war, mainly America,
  43. Britain and France." Many gulf residents believe, he says, that
  44. the Western coalition members are "not satisfied with now
  45. controlling the Middle East militarily. Through this action
  46. against B.C.C.I., the coalition is also seeking to control us
  47. financially and economically."
